Alvin Alexander - (Women's Head Coach, Xavier University)
Alvin Alexander brings energy, an outgoing personality and a passion to everything he does, especially the game of soccer.
Alexander, 51, is in his fourth season as Xavier University's first-ever full-time Women's Soccer Head Coach. Alexander led XU to a 9-7-2 record in his first season at the helm in 2005 after XU had finished 5-12-2 in the 2004 season. The highlight of the 2006 season was an undefeated home record. Xavier never recovered from a tough early-season road schedule in 2007 that included eight straight away games to start the season.
Alexander came to Xavier after spending the previous two years as the top assistant at Notre Dame, helping guide the Fighting Irish to the 2004 National Championship. Alexander, who is the first African-American head coach in Xavier history for any sport, spent two seasons on the Notre Dame women's soccer staff as the program's primary assistant coach, helping the Irish compile a 45-4-2 record and capture back-to-back Big East Regular Season Championships. In Alexander's first season in South Bend, ND finished the 2003 campaign at 20-3-1 and was ranked second in the country for most of the season. The Irish entered the 2003 NCAA Tournament seeded second before being upset in the second round. In Alexander's final season at ND the Irish finished 25-1-1, winning the 2004 National Championship with an overtime win over UCLA.
Alexander founded the Black Magic Soccer Club in 1989, growing to 11 men's and women's teams while emerging as one of the top clubs in West Texas. He served until 1999 as the club's director, recruiting and training coaches while assisting in the development of some 50 players who earned college scholarships.
More recently, Alexander was head coach in 2002-03 for three different teams (under-13 and u-15 girls, u-11 boys) with the Dallas Texans, one of the nation's premier soccer club programs. His experience also includes eight years (`93-'01) as a staff coach and trainer for the North Texas and Midland Olympic Development Programs and four years (`99-'03) as a soccer coach at the OakridgeSchool in Arlington, including two seasons as girls varsity coach. Alexander earlier was the girls development coach and head coach for three American Eagles Soccer Club teams in Colleyville (`01-'02) after serving in a similar capacity for three Arlington Strikers boys teams (`99-'00), with his director's duties including the hiring and supervising of the entire coaching staff.
The Arlington native coached the men's soccer team at Texas-PermianBasin from 1995-97, during which time the soccer program made its debut at the Odessa school. He also was a head coach and player with the Permian Basin Mirage professional indoor soccer team and played professionally in the late 1970s with the ASL's L.A. Skyhawks and Indianapolis Daredevils.
Alexander was a team captain and earned Texas college all-star honors each of his four seasons at MidwesternState (1975-78), adding All-America honors as a junior in 1977 while ranking among the nation's top-10 goal scorers in three of his seasons. He ended his career as MidwesternState's all-time goal leader (58) and later received his bachelor's degree from MidwesternState (1999) in applied arts and science.
His undergraduate days included 1975 training in Leeds, England, and he was a head coach and trainer for a 1991 Argentina Rosario international tour before serving as head coach and organizer for a 1998 tour of Leon, Mexico.
